Scott Bennett was high scoring basketball player for Branford High School in the mid-1980, where he started for three years. Scott’s high school basketball career started auspiciously as a member of the undefeated 1984 Hornet’s Freshman Team that was coached by Hall of Famer, Rusty Gordon. During this initial year, Scott and three of his teammates also were mainstays of the junior varsity team and played in several varsity contests. As a varsity player for Coach Tom Murray, he was a three-year starter. He led the Hornets in scoring and rebounding his junior and senior years. Scott joined the 1000 career point club in his senior year on his birthday, eventually recording 1093 points. He set the school’s individual game scoring record of 46 points against Seymour, breaking the record of 45 points previously held by Hall of Fame member, Jim Petela, who served as an assistant coach for the Hornets that year. Scott averaged 25 points and 14 rebounds a game as a senior. Scott was a great shooter, hitting on 45% of his field goal attempts and 86% of his free throws. As a junior, Scott earned Second Team All State honors and in 1987 was selected First Team All State. Scott was a member of the All Housatonic League Team two times, a MacDonald’s All America nominee and a New Haven Register Scholar Athlete. Scott was selected by the Connecticut High School Coaches Association to participate in its All Star Game.
Scott was a member of the BHS golf team in his junior and senior year, playing for Hall of Fame coach, Stan Petela.
Scott attended Columbia University where he majored in political science and played basketball. He was a four year starter and two-times Ivy League Rookie of the Week during his freshman year. Despite an ankle injury that sidelined him for most of his sophomore year, Scott had 608 career points, for an 8 point per game scoring average. In his senior year, Scott averaged 11 points and 6 rebounds per game. Scott was voted captain as a senior and was presented with the Howard Benson leadership award.
After graduating with honors from Columbia, Scott began his professional career in finance on a foreign exchange trading desk at JP Morgan. Since then, he has worked for some of the largest Investment Banks in the world, including Commerzbank, the second largest bank in Germany, for which he currently runs the Foreign Exchange Trading Group for North America. Scott has stayed close to Columbia University through a mentoring program for the men’s basketball team.
Scott married Suzanne Biszantz in 2004 and they have a daughter, Avery. The Bennetts live in New York City. They enjoy thoroughbred horse racing and breeding.
