Whether it was his overwhelming presence on the football field or it’s his imposing ability in the law enforcement spectrum, 2004 Branford Sports Hall of Fame inductee Ron Washington has created an aura of confidence, security, and dedication to the Branford community.
As a student at Branford High School from 1969 to 1972, Ron was a three sport athlete (football, basketball, and baseball). As a wide receiver on the Hornets’ football squad, Ron enjoyed a tremendous career and in 1971 was selected to the Connecticut All-State Football team. During that season, he caught 16 touchdown receptions, for a 30-plus yard average and was a selection to the All-Housatonic League team. In his senior year, Branford finished with a record of 7-1-2 after opening their season with an 8-8 tie against arch-rival Derby.
Following graduation from Branford High School and being recruited by several colleges, tonight’s inductee followed his instinct in the job market as a police officer. Ron started as a patrolman and worked in the Youth Division which included Youth Crime Prevention. In 1999, Ron was promoted to the position of Youth Officer. He formed the Branford Police Department program that is know as the Juvenile Review Board, which is an early intervention program for troubled youths. In addition, he serves on the board of the Branford Alcoa Foundation, which funds programs directed towards the needs of children and adults. “Officer Ron” as he is known throughout the community, is the Enforcement Coordinator to Stop Underage Drinking and serves on numerous committees including the Branford High School Mentoring Program, Take A Step Day and Family Day. All these programs are committed to serving the youth of Branford. In 2004, Ron was the Exchange Club Branford Police Officer of the Year for his immeasurable contributions to the community.
From 1997 to 1999, tonight’s inductee continued his love for football as an assistant high school coach for the freshman team.
