The accomplishments of Branford’s Marc A. Mautte, both on and off the athletic fields have brought great credit upon himself, his family, and the town of Branford.

A 1974 graduate of Branford High School, Marc’s performance on the gridiron is legendary. Playing for Coach Joe Farina, he roared out of the Hornet backfield his senior season becoming only the second ball carrier in Branford’s history to gain over 1000 yards rushing. Marc ran for 1,252 yards and scored 14 touchdowns despite missing two complete games due to injury. Most notable were his performances against; Shelton; 150 yards and three touchdowns; Lyman Hall; 152 yards and a touchdown; North Haven; 179 yards and a touchdown; North Branford; 125 yards; and three touchdowns; Sheehan 105 yards and three touchdowns;  and vs. Amity; 108 yards and a score. Marc’s superb performance earned him several post season accolades including First Team All Housatonic League, All State and High School Prep All America Honorable Mention. Marc also earned a varsity letter as a point guard in basketball, and as a sprinter on the track team. In a much anticipated race his senior season, Marc defeated Derby great John Pagliaro in the 220 yard dash.

Marc continued his athletic career at Central Connecticut State University where he earned three varsity letters in football.  A right halfback for Coach Bill Loika’s vaunted wishbone attack, Marc played a key role in helping the 1978 Blue Devils averaged over 400 yards of offense per game. Playing in an offensive system where all four backs carry the ball, Marc saved his best season for last averaging 4.6 yards per carry and gaining over 600 yards rushing while scoring 10 touchdowns. In addition, he returned kickoffs and averaged a whopping 21 yards per catch out of backfield. Marc earned two most valuable player honors for his performances against Glassboro State University and Cortland State University. In recognition of his outstanding performance, Marc’s teammates selected him as the team’s most valuable player for the 1978 season.

Upon graduation from Central, Marc served in the United States Marine Corps and attained the rank of Captain. Returning to civilian life, Marc continued his involvement in athletics by coaching youth basketball and soccer and volunteering with the Virginia State Swimming Association and the Virginia Special Olympics.
