Although he is most noted for his coaching achievements at Cheshire High School, Joe Chandler has been a long-life resident of Branford- graduating from BHS in 1949, raising two children that started at BHS, and serving on the Board of Education for 19 years.

After playing three sports and serving as class president twice, Chandler graduated from BHS in 1949. He went on to earn a B.S. degree from Springfield College and an M.S. from Southern Connecticut. After a five-year stint in the New Britain school system, he started his career at Cheshire – where he is currently supervisor of the physical education program.

His coaching career at Cheshire included 20 years as head coach, 10 as an assistant football coach, and four as head baseball coach. For four years he also was an assistant basketball coach at Branford High.

Among the offices he has held, Chandler was the past chairman of the state basketball committee, past president of the Connecticut Association of Administrators of Health and Physical Education, and served on the national committee for sports and physical education.

In Branford, he has served on the Board of Directors for the Visiting Nurses Association and the Salvation Army Advisory Board, held several offices in the St. Stephen’s Church.
