As this Branford Sports Hall of Famer captured his first swimming award at the tender age of eight, those around Howard Johnson might have speculated a great swimming career for him, and they were correct.\u00a0 After swimming in various shoreline meets, Howard went to Hillhouse High School and later captained the team in 1937.\u00a0 Before attending Yale University, Johnson continued his education at Mercersberg Academy in Pennsylvania before entering Yale University in 1938, where he had an outstanding swiimming career.<\/p>\n

Howard was a vital member to the Mercersberg Academy swim team which he led to an undefeated season as well as winning the National Prep School Championships.\u00a0 Howard won the 220 free style and was a member of the winning relay that year.<\/p>\n

As he entered Yale University, Howard quickly became an instrumental part of the Bulldogs swim team.\u00a0 As captain of an undefeated team, Howard set National Intercollegiate Freshman records in the 50, 100, and 220 yard freestyle events.\u00a0 Against Army, Johnson swam the 100 yard freestyle with a time of :51.6, which was a new Yale record and tied an NCAA record in 1942.\u00a0 Against Princeton on March 7, 1942, Johnson set a new pool record in the 50 yard freestyle in the time of :23.5.\u00a0 On February 21,1642, Johnson and the Bulldogs took on the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, Michigan, only to top them by the final score of 59-1.\u00a0 In the meet, Johnson set a new intercollegiate record in the 220 yard freestyle ( 2:09.7) and in the 400 yard freestyle relay Johnson and his teammates set a new world, American, and intercollegiate record in a time of 3:26.6.<\/p>\n

At Columbus, Ohio, in the National AAU Championship, Johnson finished second in the 100 yard freestyle and was elected to the All-American Swim Team of 1938 only to repeat the feat the next three years.\u00a0 As a senior and captain at Yale, Howard led the undefeated swim team in its dual meet competition and went on to win the three major championships \u2013 Eastern Intercollegiate, National Intercollegiate, and Senior AAU titles.\u00a0 Yale was the first college team to ever accomplish this.<\/p>\n

After graduating form Yale, Johnson served with the United States Navy in the Pacific and later returned to compete in the National AAU Championships and was a member of the 400 yard relay team that won the event and established a world record.\u00a0 In the 1950\u2019s, Howard was selected to the National Swim Hall of Fame as a result of the 100 yard world record.\u00a0 Johnson was chosen on an honorary Olympic swim team in 1940, but the games were cancelled due to World War II.<\/p>\n

Now married to Marjorie Gesner since 1943 and surrounded with three daughters and nine grandchildren, Johnson is pleased to be inducted into tonight\u2019s Branford Sports Hall of Fame.<\/p>\n
