Whether it was as a flourishing four-sport athlete, an unselfish volunteer, or as an integral member of Branford\u2019s 911 Communications Center, 2007 Branford Sports Hall of Fame inductee Anne Ballard demonstrated\u00a0 loyalty, leadership and teamwork.<\/p>\n

A product of Branford High School from 1966 to 1969, Anne played on the varsity level in four sports \u2013 field hockey, basketball, track and field and volleyball.\u00a0 As a member of the Branford High School field hockey team, Anne served as the team\u2019s goalie under the direction of past hall of fame inductees\u00a0 coach Virginia Moessmang (1990) and teammate Dorothy \u201cDody\u201d Blackstone Criscuolo (2002).\u00a0 During Anne\u2019s senior year, the Hornets achieved a win\/loss\/tie record of 4-1-2, defeating East Lyme (5-0), Hamden (7-0), Waterford (8-0), and North Haven (2-0). As the Hornets goalie, she registered five shutouts in all, including a 0-0 tie versus St. Mary\u2019s. \u00a0Anne enjoyed being part of the 1968 undefeated basketball team during her junior year. \u00a0Branford compiled a 7-0 record, defeating North Branford (26-24), North Haven (49-27) and (55-28), St. Mary\u2019s (31-29), Hamden (35-22), Mercy (28-26), and Amity Regional (50-18).\u00a0 In Anne\u2019s senior year, Branford was victorious four times against two defeats, besting East Lyme (44-9) and (59-22), North Branford (33-29), and North Haven (35-28).<\/p>\n

Off the playing fields, tonight\u2019s inductee was a member of the National Honor Society, co-recipient of the Girls Athletic Association Sweater Award and voted \u201cMost Versatile\u201d by her classmates.<\/p>\n

Anne attended Skidmore College and graduated in 1973 with a Bachelor of Science Degree. While there, she played volleyball, basketball and field hockey.\u00a0 As a junior, she was selected to the United States Field Hockey Association as a goalkeeper and backfield player.\u00a0 Anne was named second alternate goalkeeper with the USFHA touring Team Northeast Division. She played versus European traveling teams and was the only United States goalkeeper to hold the Irish team scoreless in 1972.<\/p>\n

Following college, tonight\u2019s inductee worked at the First New Haven National Bank in bank operations for almost 20 years.\u00a0 While there, she managed the Records and Mail Department, courier services, bank fleet, and vehicle maintenance. She shifted gears and in 1994 worked for the Branford Fire Department Ambulance Service as a certified and licensed Emergency Medical Technician.\u00a0 In 1996, Anne went to work for the town of Branford\u2019s 911 Communication Center, where she still works today.\u00a0 She is responsible for business and emergency phone communications; dispatch police, fire, and ambulance; and as a communications field training officer.\u00a0 Tonight\u2019s inductee\u00a0 has received several departmental\u00a0 commendations for saving lives by providing ambulance pre-arrival instructions (EMD), and successfully helping to resolve several critical police and fire incidents.\u00a0\u00a0 She also works at the Owenego Inn.<\/p>\n

Anne has volunteered her time unselfishly in many ways.\u00a0 She has served as a volunteer cook and server for the Volunteer Services Center for three years, a volunteer of the Friends of Blackstone Library, Camp Rising Sun, and the Blue Jeans for Babies.<\/p>\n
